Between the years 1970-1973, the new club enjoyed moderate success at Senior level while still fielding strong Junior teams. In late 1973 moves were initiated to form an amalgamation with the Southern Suburbs RFC. These moves were promoted largely by the difficulties the club anticipated in gaining A Grade status. Amalgamation was finally ratified at the combined Annual General Meeting of the two clubs held at the Rugby Union Club on January 24, 1974. The meeting also agreed that the home ground for the new club would be Hartfield Park, Forrestfield. Since 1974, Kalamunda Districts Rugby Union Club has gone from strength to strength, resulting in one of the largest Rugby Union Clubs in the state. Now in our 31st year, the Junior Club has a membership of over 200 children in all age groups from under 7’s to under 17’s., playing in age modified rugby: Walla, Mini, Midi and Maxi Rugby, ensuring that skills and abilities are matched from the start of our young player’s careers. Having a successful Senior Club of approximately 150 members provides those leaving Juniors with a playing path in the Senior Grades from Colts through to 1st Grade within the club. Growing up in the Juniors, and then following a planned integration into the Seniors club with their rugby mates, keeps them playing a team sport, fit and within a supportive environment. Under the guidance of skilled coaches. 2004 saw the implementation of many new programs, including Leadership skills, public speaking, kicking skills, specialist position coaching and player and coach mentors. KDRUC is committed to our aim to make Kalamunda the Club of choice in WA and in building our young men and women into not only fine Rugby players, but confident, capable members of the community. Kalamunda Districts Rugby Union Club looks forward to a successful and enjoyable future. |
Although Rugby had been played in the Kalamunda Shire since the first team from Kalamunda High School was fielded in 1963, it was not until 1969 that moves were made to form a club. At a meeting called on 28th October 1969 by John Suckling, the Kalamunda Districts Rugby Union club was formed with John Dickens as the inaugural President. Prior to 1969, junior players from Kalamunda continued their rugby in the Western Suburbs Club whose home ground was some 30 kilometers away. Prior to 1969 Kalamunda Rugby was particularly strong at the Under 16 level and some 23 players had achieved State Representation status, with 6 of these representing the Southern States in tours of New Zealand.
